Jodhaa-Akbar (Hindi: जोधा-अकबर, Urdu: جودھا اکبر) is a film released on February 15, 2008.^[1] It is directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker, the director of the Academy Award-nominated Lagaan (2001). It stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles. This film also marks the debut of newcomer Abir Abrar. Extensive research went into the making of this film which began shooting at Karjat.^[2]

The film centers around the romance between the Muslim Mughal Emperor Akbar, played by Hrithik Roshan and his Hindu wife, Jodhabai, played by Aishwarya Rai. The music is composed by acclaimed music composer A. R. Rahman. The soundtrack of the movie was released on January 19, 2008.

Synopsis

Jodhaa Akbar is a sixteenth century love story about a marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal emperor, Akbar, and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa.

Political success knew no bounds for Emperor Akbar (Hrithik Roshan). After having secured the Hindu Kush, he furthered his realm by conquest until his empire extended from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godavari River. Through a shrewd blend of diplomacy, intimidation and brute force , Akbar won the allegiance of the Rajputs. But little did Akbar know that when he married Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a fiery Rajput princess, in order to further strengthen his relations with the Rajputs, he would in turn be embarking upon a new journey – the journey of true love.

The daughter of King Bharmal of Amer, Jodhaa resented being reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage of alliance, and Akbar’s biggest challenge now did not merely lie in winning battles, but in winning the love of Jodhaa – a love hidden deep below resentment and extreme prejudice. Jodhaa-Akbar is their untold love story.

Historical Accuracy

The director has admitted that about 70% of the movie is based on his imagination. However, many of the events portrayed in the movie are based on real events. Certain Rajput groups claimed Jodhaa was married to Akbar's son, Jahangir, not Akbar. They also demanded a public apology from Ashutosh Gowariker. The film was not released in 30 cinema theatres in Rajasthan.

Several historians claim that Akbar's Rajput wife was never known as "Jodha Bai" during the Mughal period. According to Professor Shirin Moosvi, a historian of Aligarh Muslim University, Neither the Akbarnama (a biography of Akbar commissioned by Akbar himself), nor any historical text from the period refer to her as Jodha Bai. Moosvi notes that the name "Jodha Bai" was first used to refer to Akbar's wife in the 18th and 19th centuries in historical writings. In Tujuk-i-Jahangiri, she is referred as Mariam Zamani.

According to historian Imtiaz Ahmad, the director of the Khuda Baksh Oriental Public Library in Patna, the name "Jodha" was used for Akbar's wife for the first time by Lieutenant-Colonel James Tod, in his book Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan. According to Ahmad, Tod was not a professinal historian. N R Farooqi claims that Jodha Bai was not the name of Akbar's Rajput queen; it was the name of Jahangir's Rajput wife.

While making the film I did my best to go by the book. I consulted the best historians and went through the most rigorous research. And there are different names used for Akbar's wife, Jodhaa being one of them. In fact, there's a disclaimer about the Rajput queen's name at the beginning of the film. But to see that, the protesters have to see the film.

”

Protests and legal issues

Community's protests against the film in some states and it has been banned by the States of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Uttarakhand. However, the producer has moved the Supreme Court by challenging it. Later, the Supreme Court of India lifted the ban on screening the film for now in Uttar Pradesh and some towns of Uttarakhand and Haryana. The court scrapped the Uttar Pradesh government ban as well as similar orders by authorities in Dehradun in Uttarkhand and in Ambala, Sonepat and Rewari in Haryana.

Production

Ashutosh Gowariker hired a research team of historians and scholars from New Delhi, Aligarh, Lucknow, Agra and Jaipur to guide him on this film and help him keep things historically accurate. He clarified that the name of the film remains Jodhaa-Akbar, and not Akbar-Jodhaa as reported by sections of the media. Over 80 elephants, 100 horses and 55 camels were used in the movie. Name Of Main Titled “Azeem O Shan, Shahenshah”, the song featured about one thousand dancers in traditional costumes, wielding swords and shields at a grand location in Karjat. The budget was about 37 crore Rupees (approx 7.42 million USD).

The first television promo was aired on 9 December, 2007.

Reception

The film has been received well at US and UK box-office. The film has grossed $1.3 million dollars in the first weekend in the North American box office. The film had a somewhat weak start at indian boxoffice but thanks to good word of mouth went on to to do 57 crore net hence being declared a hit;
Hindustan Times, a leading Indian newspaper gave the movie 2 stars. Khalid Mohammed, reviewer for the paper calling, "Like it or not Ashutosh Gowariker, who is normally a fine and conscientious director, has miscalculated the technical logistics and emotional content of a period piece. Crucial detailing isn’t the virtue here."

AOL India (Noyon Jyoti Parasara) gave it four stars, saying " Ashutosh Gowariker has proved that he is one of the best filmmakers we have today. While your heart goes for the love between the two protagonists, the film leaves you at such heights of emotions that you would literally be shaking with excitement! The film also comes at a very right time as Akbar indeed could be a role model for people and rulers today. The king not only had a secular vision, but also a will to know what the common man wanted, apart from being kind hearted and noble,"

New york times gave the movie a positive review, comparing Ashutosh Gowariker to Cecil DeMille.

Deepika Shetty, a famous Singapore film critic, called the film a " visual treat " and gave it a good 4 stars out of 5.

Dhoom 2 (Hindi: धूम २, Urdu: ٢ ﺩﻬﻭﻡ,Telugu: ధూమ్ 2, Tamil: தூம் 2) is a 2006 Bollywood film directed by Sanjay Gadhvi. It stars Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Uday Chopra and Bipasha Basu. The movie is a sequel to the 2004 hit, Dhoom. The film was released on November 24, 2006. This movie has been dubbed into Telugu and Tamil; those versions were released on the same day as the Hindi-Urdu version.

The film is Gadhvi's fourth directorialim venture after Tere Liye (2000), Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2002), and Dhoom (2004), and his third with Yash Raj Films. The film's score and soundtrack were composed by Pritam and lyrics were penned by Sameer. The film was shot partially in-studio, in India, and also on location in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Durban, South Africa. It was the first Bollywood movie to be filmed in Rio de Janeiro.^[1].

Synopsis

The police are baffled by a master thief known only as Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan) because he leaves an 'A' symbol after each robbery. Aryan steals the English crown by sky diving onto a train, disguising himself as the queen, stealing the crown, and escaping.

He is pursued by ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan), ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu), and Sub Inspector Ali Akbar (Uday Chopra). They try to catch him in the act as he robs a Mumbai museum, but fail.

Mr. A, in the meantime, is caught by the wiles of Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), who claims to be A's number-one fan. Attempting to catch Sunehri in the act, Shonali breaks her leg. Mr. A agrees to take Sunehri into partnership, not knowing that she is actually working for the police or more specifically for Jai.

Mr. A and Sunehri fly to Copacabana, where Mr. A plans another big heist. The police officers, Jai and Ali, follow. While in Brazil they stay with Shonali's twin sister Monali and uncover that Mr. A's real name is Aryan Singh. Aryan, who has trusted Sunehri with his life, finds out that she is working against him and accuses her of treachery. She then realizes that she loves him and joins him in earnest. Their heist is a success; their escape, not so much. In the end Sunehri shoots Aryan who falls off a cliff, though Sunehri claims she did it out of love. However, it is implied that even this was a last-resort faked death, planned out by Aryan and Sunehri, as in the end they are seen working at a restaurant. Jai drops in unexpectedly but leaves them alone once Aryan hands over the details of where he has stashed the loot from all his robberies.

It is considered the first major superhero movie to be produced by Bollywood and it takes considerable inspiration from the Hollywood movie Paycheck. The movie stars Rekha, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Naseeruddin Shah. Preity Zinta makes a special appearance. It has been subsequently dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.

Plot

Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) and Nisha (Preity Zinta) are married and they have a child, Krishna. Rohit apparently dies in a lab accident in Singapore; Nisha also dies shortly after childbirth at the news of her husband's apparent death. The child, Krishna, starts growing up under the care of his grandmother Sonia (Rekha). As he is growing up, he discovers that he has inherited the superpowers that were transferred to his father by the alien Jadoo in the previous installment, Koi... Mil Gaya. The movie shows how Krishna (Hrithik Roshan) deals with his powers and saves the world from a megalomaniac scientist, Dr. Siddhant Arya (Naseeruddin Shah).

As the head of a large information company based in Singapore, Dr. Arya had hired Rohit to build an advanced computer that could see the future, telling Rohit that it will be used to avoid disasters and improve mankind. The brilliant Rohit takes just two years to invent the prescient computer. When he discovers with its help that Dr. Arya will betray him, using the knowledge granted him by the computer to empower himself instead, Rohit destroys the computer. Dr. Arya, however, is able to rebuild the computer after 20 years of work.

We discover in the beginning of the film that as a young child, Krishna is extremely intelligent and gifted; for example, he is able to draw beautiful portraits of his mother, perform Herculean feats of strength, run at tremendous speed, communicate with non-human animals, and think with great clarity. He is brought before a committee which realizes his gifts, but his grandmother fears that the greedy may exploit him as they did his father, and so the two move far away into a remote village near some mountains. Krishna spends his childhood there, playing with other children and racing with animals. However, he soon grows frustrated as he sees that all those his age are moving away to the city to greater and grander things and he becomes upset at his grandmother for making him stay in the village.

Krishna meets his love interest Priya (Priyanka Chopra) when she visits India from Singapore. During a flight on a parachute-glider, Priya becomes tangled with some tree branches and nearly falls to her death. Krishna, using his exceptional agility and strength, rescues her and restores her to the tourists' camp. In order to hide his identity, he instructs the local guide, Bahadur, to spread tales of a ghost. Eventually, Krishna develops a soft spot for Priya and reveals the truth. He is thereafter a friend to the tourist party, until they leave.

Subsequently, Priya and her friend Honey are threatened with losing their jobs as TV journalists. To regain their boss's trust in them, they invite Krishna to Singapore, where they request that he demonstrate his powers. Krishna, however, does not break the promise he made to Sonia that he would keep his ability a secret.

The hero Krrish as we know him is born when a circus tent catches fire. In order to rescue those trapped by the flames without revealing his powers, Krishna reverses his jacket so that the lining is outermost, then dons a broken mask that he finds on the ground. He then rescues all the people. When the last one to come out asks who he is, he habitually replies "Krish–" stopping before he can give his full name.

In time, "Krrish" becomes a sensation in the news. Masks like his are sold among children, and the city promises to reward him financially if he should present himself.

During his stay in Singapore, Krishna befriends a local young man called Kris Lee, soon after helping him to complete a martial arts demonstration held to raise money for his wheelchair-bound sister. When Kris Lee sees Krrish beat up a group of thugs who have taken Priya's ring– pulling off his mask afterward– Krishna gives him his famous mask so that his friend can gain enough money to help his sister. They show Krish on TV, and happen to show Krishna and Priya as well.

Vikram Sinha (Sharat Saxena), Dr. Arya's employee, has been looking for Rohit's son for a very long time; having seen Krishna, Vikram follows him. Priya finds a tape that proves Krishna is actually Krrish, and decides to bring it to the public. However, when Krishna comes to know of her intentions, he decides to leave. He explains everything to her regarding his gift and need for secrecy. Priya goes to find her boss to get the tape of Krishna back; there, she runs into Vikram Sinha. She manages to catch up with Krishna before he leaves, whereupon Vikram Sinha tells Krishna why he's trying to find him.

It is revealed that Rohit is still alive and has been in suspended animation for 20 long years. Dr. Arya, his former colleague, is aware that the computer can only have been activated by Rohit's Heart rate|heartbeat and retina scan. When he uses the computer, Dr. Arya sees his own death at the hands of Krrish, and therefore postpones killing Rohit in order to eliminate this new threat. Because Kris Lee has been advertised and rewarded as Krrish, Dr. Arya kills him. After Krrish finds his friend dead, he becomes intent on getting revenge against Dr. Arya.

After arriving at Dr. Arya's base, Krrish bursts into the compound after disposing of many guards outside. Priya is eventually taken captive, but Krrish manages to rescue both Rohit and Priya after a dramatic battle wherein Dr. Arya is fatally impaled to death, exactly as the computer predicted. Dr. Arya's attempts to prevent his death have led to the prediction coming true, much like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Along with Rohit and Priya, Krishna returns to his village in India where Rohit's mother Sonia is reunited with her son.

One night, Krishna uses the Om computer developed by his father to contact the alien Jadoo, so that Rohit, his father, may thank him.

Reaction

Krrish was generally met with positive reaction in its homeland India but with a mixed reaction overseas. In India, Taran Adarsh of IndiaFM.com wrote that "Krrish is a terrifically exciting and compelling experience", and even considered it superior to Superman, Batman and Spider-Man. B4U TV also gave a generally positive review, praising the second half of the film.

Overseas, Leo Goldsmith of notcoming.com criticized the special effects and for "wearing its corporate sponsorship on its sleeve", but praised "its dialogue" and "every other shot of the film." Jaspreet Pandohar of BBC criticized the script for being "low on originality" but praised Hrithik Roshan's performance and the action scenes choreographed by Tony Ching Siu-Tung. According to Richard James Havis of The Hollywood Reporter, "This Bollywood epic crunches together romance, comedy, extra-terrestrials, martial arts, dancing and action to tell an entertaining story about a reluctant Indian superhero" but said it may be "far too crazed for foreign viewers." David Chute of L.A. Weekly said it was a "hearty pulp cinema that really sticks to your ribs." Ronnie Scheib of Variety said it was an "enjoyable, daffily improbable escapist romp." Laura Kern of The New York Times said it was a blend of "carefree romance, show-stopping action and sci-fi."

Lakshya (also known as Objective) is a 2004 Bollywood film directed by Farhan Akhtar. It stars Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri and Boman Irani. Roshan plays the role of Lieutenant (later Acting Captain) Karan Shergill, who leads his team {which was initially of 12 and later went down to 6} to victory over the terrorists. It is a fictional story based on the historical events of the 1999 Kargil Conflict.

Plot

Karan Shergil (Roshan) is a young man who has no actual goal in mind or plans for his future. He represents those urban youth in modern India, who have money but little ambition or purpose in their lives. His father is a businessman; his brother is a successful individual living in America, but Karan is drifting along. His girlfriend, Romi (Zinta), a student activist and reporter who espouses fashionable causes out of wellmeaning sincerity, tells him he needs to find a goal in life. When a friend announces he is going to join the Army, Karan applies for the Indian Military Academy as well, and enrolls in the Indian Military Academy despite dissent from his parents.

Karan's first days at the IMA are a disaster. Because he is indisciplined and unused to a spartan existence, he keeps getting into trouble at the academy. Upset, he leaves the academy without permission, sneaking over the wall at Last Post. However, the girl he has been pursuing, Romi, breaks off their relationship because he quit even this attempt at being an adult. His father also expresses displeasure at his action, despite his mother urging him to join the family business. Karan finally comes to terms with his situation and decides to face his demons. He returns to the IMA, takes his punishment, and becomes a focused, disciplined cadet leader, graduating as a cadet officer.

Lt. Karan (the starting rank for all new commissioned officers in the Indian Army) is posted to the 3rd Battalion of the Punjab Regiment, commanded by Col. Sunil Damle (Amitabh Bachchan), and handles his responsibilities well. From an immature teenager to a mature officer, he finally decides the essence of his life or his goal - 'Lakshya'. His Lakshya is now his unit's target - a mountain peak - known to have been recently invaded by the Pakistani Army.

The movie depicts Karan's transformation- it shows how the Army, and its disciplined, selfless and spartan existence moulds an impressionable young individual accustomed to a hedonistic lifestyle, into a mature human being who can think and act for himself.

Koī... Mil Gayā (Hindi: कोई मिल गया, Urdu: کوئی مل گیا, translation: I Found Someone) is a 2003 Bollywood science fiction film, directed by Rakesh Roshan (who also has a cameo role), starring Rekha, Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta, and released on August 8, 2003. The film shares many plot elements with Steven Spielberg's E.T. and Satyajit Ray's The Alien, and may have been inspired by them. Some scenes also appear to have been inspired by Flubber. Koi... Mil Gaya is said to have inspired an Indonesian television series Si Yoyo, which also features a miraculous alien visitor. The film was screened at the Jerusalem Film Festival and the Denmark NatFilm Festival

Rakesh Roshan has produced a sequel to the film titled Krrish, which opened worldwide on June 23, 2006 and has also become successful.

Plot

A Sindhi scientist named Sanjay Mehra (played by the film's director Rakesh Roshan) creates a computer from which he dispatches variations of the syllable Om, hoping to attract the attention of extra-terrestrial life. When he finally receives a response, the scientific community mocks him and makes fun of him...

As he is driving home, an alien spacecraft enters the vicinity, then he looks out the window and exclaims: "UFO," and begins to veer off the road. His pregnant wife turns around the steering wheel causing the box car to flip over a stone and explode. His wife is thrown out of the car and Dr. Mehra dies in the car. His pregnant wife, played by Rekha, survives the wreck but her son Rohit (played by Hrithik Roshan, who is Rakesh Roshan's son), when born, is developmentally disabled.

His mother raises him with tender care in the town of Kasauli, by which he grows up to be a young man of limited intellect and childish personality, yet with a loving heart. Rohit has a number of much younger friends; children with whom he plays and who are very loyal to him. He also befriends a young woman named Nisha (Preity Zinta). Nisha feels sympathy for him and humors him as one would humor a child, having learned of his retardation from his mother, who chastises Nisha's suitor Raj for beating Rohit up.

Rohit and Nisha find Rohit's father's alien-contact computer and summon the aliens by accident. The visiting aliens leave in haste and one of them is left behind. Rohit, Nisha, and Rohit's young friends find him, befriend him, and name him Jadoo (meaning "Magic" in Hindi and Urdu) when they discover his abilities of psychokinesis. Jadoo's remarkably vast intelligence leads him to discover that Rohit is mentally subnormal, whereupon he uses his magic to enhance the boy's mind. Rohit becomes a child prodigy. He is now accepted by young-adult society. Only the loyalty of his friends and Nisha prevent him from developing total arrogance. Raj and his sycophants attempt to embarrass Rohit multiple times, only to be beaten in fights as well as in a basketball game, wherein Rohit's bodily strength has increased with his mental calibre.

Rekha as featured in the film

Nisha and Rohit spend more and more time together, before and after his enhancement; ultimately Rohit proposes marriage to her. She agrees. Jadoo's presence is kept secret from all humans except Rohit's friends and mother.

However, the government has not given up their search for the alien arrival. Police capture Jadoo, who is then rescued by Rohit. Jadoo flees in his returned family's spaceship and apparently takes Rohit's new powers with him. Rohit is again mentally retarded, which saves him from prosecution by the government. Later, Jadoo or one of his relatives restores Rohit's special abilities -- permanently. Nisha and Rohit can now lead a happy life together.

Strangely, in the sequel Krrish, Rohit's personality is still somewhat like that of a child's. It is possible that although his intelligence was increased, he may slowly have regressed back into the emotional state of a child.

The film is a remake of the 1976 film Chitchor and features Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles. The movie had a worldwide release on June 27, 2003.

Plot

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon is the story of Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor), a girl of today's generation full of life. She lives life on her own terms and gets very upset when her mother Susheela (Himani Shivpuri), arranges for her to see a boy leading to a marriage prospect. Roopa, the eldest daughter shows Sanjana's photos to Prem's mother who instantly approves of her. She eventually meets Prem Kishen (Hrithik Roshan).

At first she cannot stand him but eventually both fall in love with each other. Her parents are happy that Sanjana likes him, but suddenly Sanjana's sister Roopa, e-mails them and tells them that Prem could not make it so they sent someone else.

The confused parents later find out that the boy that is here is not in fact the Prem, the rich N.R.I (non resident Indian) whom Sanjana was meant to meet. He is Prem Kishen, an employee in Prem Kumar's company. It gets even worse when the real Prem (played by Abhishek Bachchan) arrives to meet Sanjana. The meddling mother ousts Prem Kishen, though the father (played by Pankaj Kapoor) has reservations about doing so as he sees how much Sanjana and Prem are in love. Prem Kumar likes Sanjana instantly and Sanjana can't believe how much she has in common with Prem Kumar, but Sanjana is now inseparable from Prem Kishen, her true love.

Trouble ensues; a marriage is decided for Sanjana to marry Prem Kumar with Prem Kumar's mothers (Reema Lagoo) blessing. Prem Kishen's loyalty to his boss and his bosses happiness forces him to leave and let the marriage go on. Sanjana finally meets her soul mate when Prem Kumar gets to know the reality and decides to reunite the couple.

Synopsis

Raj Khanna (Hrithik Roshan), Pooja Sahani (Rani Mukerji) and Tina Kapoor (Kareena Kapoor) are childhood friends. While Raj has always been attracted to the vivacious Tina, he is completely unaware of the quiet Pooja's feelings for him.

Raj's father (Kiran Kumar) decides to move to England with his family to take up a new job, so Raj has to go away from his friends. He makes Tina promise to write to him via e-mail. But Tina soon becomes occupied with other things, so it's the loyal Pooja who writes to Raj; but she always signs with Tina's name to help Tina keep her promise, sometimes coming close to signing her own name. Raj and Pooja have many things in common, and their e-mails bring them very close to each other. A decade and a half later, Raj returns to India for a short vacation. By now, he's in love with the girl he has been writing to, and believes he can recognise her at first sight.

When the three of them finally meet, Raj, to Pooja's disappointment, completely ignores her and is besotted with Tina, who is as vivacious as ever. However, during the two weeks of his vacation, he cannot help but notice that the real Tina is completely different compared to the Tina he knew from the e-mails. He also starts to like Pooja, without realising she is the one he is really in love with.

He returns to London, where Pooja coincidentally arrives for an interview, and there he discovers that it was Pooja who wrote all the letters. They confess their love for each other and decide to get married, but fate plays an unexpected trick on them. Back in India, Tina's father (Sachin Khedekar) has died, leaving Tina all alone in the world. By now, she is in love with Raj as well.

Pooja now refuses to marry Raj, since she does not want to break Tina's heart. Raj is the only one Tina has left now. Raj's parents also agree to the marriage, but Raj wants to tell them that he really loves Pooja. Pooja however, still refuses to marry Raj and so he angrily vows to her that he will only marry Tina if Pooja marries someone else on the same day.

Enter a friend of Raj, Rohan Verma (Uday Chopra). Rohan is greatly attracted to Pooja and the families are all for the match. Pooja bows to the inevitable and agrees to marry Rohan on the same day as Raj and Tina. That way, she hopes to satisfy Raj's condition and ensure Tina's happiness. Rohan realises something is wrong and that Pooja does not love him, but keeps up the charade nevertheless. On the day of the marriage, Tina realises that Raj is really in love with Pooja, so she gives him up and finally Pooja and Raj get married.

The film featured a medley of eighteen songs which was a major hit with the audience. The songs contained mostly old songs with a few modern songs. Most of the songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar were sung in her earlier years.

The film was heavily hyped before release due to the A list cast resulting in excessive media focus on the film. Synopsis

Esha Malhotra (Esha Deol) is a bright, spirited girl who has just left college. She soon begins to correspond with an anonymous man. The man turns out to be photographer Rahul Sharma (Hrithik Roshan). They do not meet, exchange numbers or tell their names to each other but they continue to write to each other. Fate brings the two together when Esha hires Rahul to be their photographer for a campaign.

Esha's grandfather wants her to marry and he arranges her to meet Akshay Kapoor (Saif Ali Khan), a flirt and womanizer who also happens to be Rahul's best friend. Esha totally in love with her pen pal does not want to marry him but Akshay is falling for Esha. Rahul arranges to meet the one he writes the letters to and to his shock he finds out its Esha. Rahul decides to forget her; and Esha unable to contact Rahul agrees to get wed to Akshay. Rahul leaves for Vancouver the day before the wedding, never to be seen again.

Four years later, in a mall in Canada, he meets Akshay who now has a son. Rahul thinks he is about to meet Esha but instead meets Akshay's former girlfriend who is now his wife. Akshay explains that he could not marry Esha in the end because she still loves her mystery writer. Suddenly, a group of workers in the mall carry a large portrait of Esha right in front of where Akshay and Rahul are standing, and Akshay realizes that Rahul is the mystery writer Esha fell in love with. He urges Rahul to hurry back to India; Rahul does so and reunites with Esha.

Synopsis

Brought up in a repressive, conservative household, Sapna Dholakia (Amisha Patel) is terrified to experience the freedom of falling in love with Rohit (Hrithik Roshan), fearing the upheaval it will cause in her family, namely her dad, Pratap Dholakia (Kiran Kumar), who has plans for Sapna to marry Rishabh Patel, the son of a friend; then there is her brother, Raman Dholakia (Mukesh Tiwari), who follows in the footsteps of his dad, and will prevent Sapna from marrying Rohit.

However Rohit is determined to marry Sapna and no one else and this is met with resistance from the Dholakia clan, who first severely beat Sapna, and then imprison her in her room; and then lure Rohit to a secluded spot and proceed to beat him within every inch of his life, and there is no one who can even dare to think to intervene with the Dholakia family. They do finally get married though.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Devanagari: कभी ख़ुशी कभी ग़म, Nastaliq: کبھی خوشی کبھی غم - "Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sadness") is a Bollywood film released in India and countries with large NRI populations on December 14, 2001.

It features Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji in a guest appearance. It is director Karan Johar's second movie (after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai).

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was the highest grossing Indian film overseas till 2006, when its record was broken by Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. It climbed up to 3rd place in the British box office within two weeks of release, and maintained its place for over 3 weeks. The film was also thought to have broken the American Box Office Top 10, but this remains uncertain due to a lack of confirmed figures from the distributors. The film was the first Bollywood feature to see a theatrical release in Germany (with German subtitles, a dubbed version was produced, too). It was the highest grossing Indian film ever until Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002) released.

Plot

Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) is the adopted son of Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) and his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan). Both of them love Rahul more than their biological son Rohan (Hrithik Roshan), who is younger than Rahul by several years. Yash Raichand is a rich and famous business man in India. He believes in keeping traditions, and is against love marriages. When Rahul returns home from overseas in London, he meets Anjali, a sweetshop owner's daughter, (Kajol) and falls in love with her. Pooja (Kareena Kapoor), Anjali's little sister, and Rohan also become friends as well.

Yash decides to get Rahul married to his friend's daughter, Naina (Rani Mukerji). Rahul, however, tells his father that he wants to marry Anjali; this angers Yash, who berates Rahul for not considering Anjali's breeding and status (Anjali is a common girl from a middle class family, as opposed to Naina). Rahul apologizes to Yash and promises to do whatever is asked of him. He goes to tell Anjali that he can't marry her, and finds out that her father has died all of a sudden. After seeing that Anjali and Pooja have no other family and no one to live with, he marries Anjali on the spot. When he brings her home, his father disowns him. Rahul, shocked and hurt, shares an emotional good-bye with his mother; Nandini asks Rohan's nanny, Sayeeda (Farida Jalal), to go with Rahul wherever he goes so that he will always have his mother's love and care. After visiting Rohan, who is at boarding school, one last time he leaves with Anjali, Pooja, and Sayeeda.

Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) is devastated by the split in the family, but has never learned why Rahul left because Rahul had made him promise never to ask. When Rohan comes home for the holidays ten years later, he stops to meet his maternal and paternal grandmothers. He overhears them discussing the split, and they tell him the whole truth. When Rohan returns home, he learns from a few acquaintances of Anjali's that Rahul and Anjali have settled down in London. Vowing to himself to bring Rahul and Anjali home, he tells his parents that he wants to go to London to study. Yash reluctantly agrees. As soon as he arrives in London, he tracks Rahul down and learns his address. He enrolls at a university and finds that Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) happens to be a student there. He tells her who he is and asks her to help him bring the family back together.

Meanwhile, Rahul has started his own business and is living comfortably with Pooja, Sayeeda and Anjali and their nine-year-old son, Krish. Pooja tells them that Rohan is her best friend's brother who has come from India and needs a place to stay. Rahul stubbornly dissagrees but Anjali warmly welcomes him because he's Indian, Rahul eventually agrees due to most of his family taking Anjali's side and Rohan soon becomes a part of the family without revealing who he is. He reminds the family how much they miss India and their parents. Eventually Sayeeda finds out who he really is, eventually Rohan tells everyone the truth and tries to convince Rahul to come back to India and meet his parents.Rahul dissagrees saying that their father wants nothing to do with him because he married Anjali. Rohan even goes so far as to convince Yash and Nandini to come to London with hope that Yash will reunite with Rahul. This fails, but Rahul and Nandini share a joyful reunion. At this point Anjali, too, attempts to persuade Rahul to go back to India and meet his father. Rahul, convinced that his father doesn't love him and wants nothing to do with him, until they learn that Yash's mother has died; her last wish was for Rahul, Yash, and Rohan to light her funeral pyre together. Rahul goes back to India, but participates in the funeral without speaking to his father.

Nandini confronts Yash and tells him, for the first time in ten years, that he was wrong in his mind and thoughts for cutting ties with Rahul, whom he had brought into their home with so much love and happiness. This leaves Yash stunned, and at odds with himself. Rohan finally manages to convince Rahul to speak to Yash. He takes Rohan, Pooja, and Anjali and goes to meet him, and finds Yash humbled and sad. He apologizes to Rahul and berates him for believing that Yash, his father, did not love him and for not returning home sooner. Things end happily, with Rohan and Pooja's wedding.

The film brings back the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai star cast comprising of Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji.

The second half of the film is set principally in London, and many scenes were filmed there. The film was also shot in places like Egypt, Bicester Village Shopping Centre (on DVD's deleted scenes), Blenheim Palace (King's College in the film), Bluewater Shopping Centre (the mall), Bond St., Kingsway Rd., Covent Garden, British Museum, Butler's Wharf, Heathrow Airport, Leicester Square, Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Piccadilly Circus, Stowe School, The Strand and Waddesdon Manor.

The "e" added to Kabhi was mainly because the director, Karan Johar believes in numerology. Shahrukh Khan's son, Aryan Khan plays the young Rahul in the beginning of the movie.

Abhishek Bachchan initially had a cameo in this movie but it was later cut out. Karan Johar mentioned in the Deleted Scenes DVD that the legendary actress Waheeda Rahman was to play Amitabh Bachchan's mother in the film. A few scenes were shot but her husband died and Waheeda Rahman was forced to opt out. In 2005 the movie was released on DVD in Poland as Czasem slonce, czasem deszcz (Sometimes sun, sometimes rain).

Soundtrack

The music of the film was done by Jatin Lalit, Sandesh Shandilya and Aadesh Shrivastava as a special guest music director. Lyrics were provided by Sameer and Anil Pandey. There are total 11 tracks in the album. Singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Amit Kumar, Sudesh Bhonsle, Sunidhi Chauhan and Usha Uthup were selected for singing.

Yaadein (Hindi: यादें, Urdu: یادیں, translation: "Memories") is a 2001 Bollywood film directed by Subhash Ghai. It was filmed throughout India, Malaysia and the UK.

Synopsis

Raj Singh Puri is best friends with L.K. Malhotra who is in turn younger brother to J.K. Malhotra. The brothers are business tycoons and Raj works in their company. Raj is father to three young daughters, the first one gets married through arrangement but the second one marries her lover. After a few weeks at her in-laws, the second daughter returns home asking for divorce. After this Raj and his last daughter become strictly against love and relationships. All this changes when Isha (the third daughter) falls in love with the heir to the Malhotra empire, Ronit, L.K. Malhotra's son. The ask for Raj's blessing but he bluntly refuses and Isha understandingly shuns Ronit and Raj arranges for Ronit to be married to the daughter of another tycoon. Ronit is unhappy and makes Raj realise that his fiance's family is not right for them and Raj approaches the Malhotras to break off the engagement however J.K. Malhotra shuns him by calling him poor and small. The other Malhotras join forces to make J.K. to realise his mistake and Ronit is finally married to Isha.

Criticism

The film was the first box office flop for Subhash Ghai and critical reviews were mixed. Ghai has since gone on record defending the film, stating that he originally developed it as solely a story of a father and his three daughters (their love interests were secondary). However, distributors apparently put pressure on him to showcase more of Hrithik Roshan in the film (his popularity skyrocketed during the making of this film). Kareena Kapoor has also since gone on record supporting the film in spite of its debacle, thanking Ghai for giving her a role that allowed to her showcase a lot of range. It was Jackie Shroff's acting that kept the movie running alive. For his excellent performance in the movie, he was nominated for a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award in 2002.

Mission Kashmir is a 2000 Bollywood film directed and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and starring Sanjay Dutt, Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta and Jackie Shroff as the main characters. Mission Kashmir follows the life and tragedy of a young boy named Altaaf after his entire family gets killed by police officers. Ironically he is adopted by the man who killed them. The movie deals with the India-Pakistan-conflict and especially with the tragedy of children suffering from war. Its screenplay was written by Pulitzer Prize Finalist Suketu Mehta. The movie was rated R in America due to violence. The film was screened at the Stockholm International Film Festival.

In a valley of astonishing beauty, a small family lives in an idyllic house: a father, a mother, a son. They are the very picture of happiness and love. But appearances are deceptive.

This pastoral landscape is the strife-torn valley of Kashmir, and the son, Altaaf, is an orphan of war who has been adopted by a policeman, Inayat Khan (Sanjay Dutt), and his wife, Neelima (Sonali Kulkarni). Altaaf is slowly recovering from the psychic wounds of seeing his parents and his young sister shot to death before his eyes by a masked man.

One day, Altaaf discovers that the man he now calls "Abba" is the same masked intruder who killed his defenseless family during a firefight with militants. In that single moment of discovery, a warrior is born. Altaaf puts on the same mask that Khan wore during the fatal fight, and flees into the darkness.

Ten years later, a famed guerilla fighter named Hilal Kohistani (Jackie Shroff) leads a determined band of men into the valley of Kashmir. These men are renegades who pride themselves on their distance from any other militant group or government agencies. They are completely unknown and unsupported, and so are eager to make a worldwide reputation for themselves at one stroke.

Fiza (Hindi: फ़ीज़ा, Urdu: ﻓﻀﺎ) is a 2000 Indian film directed and written by Khalid Mohammed. The film stars Jaya Bachchan, Karisma Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. Although the film failed at the box office, it was well acclaimed by critics. Originally Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan were supposed to have cameo appearances, but their scenes were removed due to considerations about the length of the running time.

Synopsis

Six years after Fiza's (Karisma Kapoor) brother, Aman (played by Hrithik Roshan) disappears during the 1993 Mumbai riots, she goes to look for him. When she does find him, to her horror she sees that he has joined a terrorist group.

She forces him to come home, and he finally re-unites with their mother (played by Jaya Bachchan). However his allegiance and thoughts make him want to return to the terrorist network, led by Murad Khan (Manoj Bajpai). A confrontation with two men who harass Fiza leads to Aman revealing his involvement with the terrorist network in front of his sister, mother and the police. His mother's grief and disappointment eventually lead her to commit suicide.

Fiza tries once more to find her brother, with the help of Aniruddh (Bikram Saluja). Aman has been sent on a mission to kill two powerful politicians; when he does succeed in assassinating them, his own terrorist group tries to kill him. He escapes and Fiza follows him. They confront each other and with the police closing in on him, he asks her to kill him. After much persuasion Fiza kills her brother. Aman dies saying the first Kalma in Islam, Laa ila ha illallah, Mohammad dur Rasullullah

Audience Response

The film was critically acclaimed but did not do well at the box office. Audiences praised the three lead performances. Karisma Kapoor in particular was applauded for her performance as a disillusioned sister. She also won the IIFA Best Actress Award for her performance as did Jaya Bachchan in the best supporting actress category. They also both won Filmfare Awards in the best actress and best supporting actress categories.

The movie was also the main winner at the BFJA Awards, taking the Best Director for Khalid Mohammed, Best Actor for Hrithik Roshan, Best Actress for Karisma Kapoor and Best Supporting Actress for Jaya Bachchan.

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (translation:Say you love me) is a 2000 Bollywood blockbuster movie directed by Rakesh Roshan. It focuses on the strange coincidence of two strangers looking physically alike. One of them is shot dead owing to conspiracy hatched by corrupt police in India and the other flies in to India from New Zealand to help find his killers.

The movie stars Hrithik Roshan in a dual role, and Amisha Patel and Anupam Kher. This movie was Hrithik Roshan's debut and the movie which made him an instant star in Bollywood. Not only did this movie launch Hrithik's career, but it also launched the careers of the actress Amisha Patel and the singer Lucky Ali. The film was a fan favourite, with crowd-pleasing song and dance numbers like "Ek Pal Ka Jeena," a BMW Z3 cruising through scenic locations of New Zealand, and star-power of Lucky Ali.

Synopsis

Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) is an aspiring singer who meets Sonia Saxena (Amisha Patel). They end up going on a cruise together and eventually get stranded on a deserted island. They eventually fall deeply in love but her father (Anupam Kher) is bitterly opposed to their relationship. Unfortunately for Rohit he is killed by two corrupt policemen. Sonia goes into depression so her father sends her to New Zealand to her cousin to recover and get over Rohit.

When she reaches there she meets Raj, who looks like Rohit (also Hrithik Roshan). Sonia and Raj soon meet and he falls in love with her. But she doesn't return his love back, because she knows that her one true love is dead, and seeing someone's face which is so similar is just too painful. Sonia goes back to India and is followed by Raj. On landing, however, he is shot by one of Rohit's killers. Soon after, Raj and Sonia figure out Rohit was murdered. Their friends make a plan to find Rohit's killers, but it backfires and the murderers kidnap Sonia. Raj comes to the rescue and saves her. Then and there, he figures out who Rohit's killers are and surprisingly one of their accomplices is Sonia's father. Eventually, all ends well with the bad guys going to jail and Raj and Sonia getting married.

Deepak (Jeetendra) is a truckdriver who gives a lift to a famous singer Aasha (Reena Roy) when her vehicle breaks down. They become friends. He is already in love with Mala (Rameshwari), whom he marries. Aasha wishes him well, even though she has fallen for Deepak. Deepak has an accident, and everyone believes that he is dead. His mother, in a moment of grief, tells a pregnant Mala to go away. Mala goes home to her father, but he dies. Upset with everything in her life, she jumps from a bridge into the water. She is saved by a temple community, but finds that she lost her sight. She gives birth and names her daughter Deepamala, combining her and her husband's names. Deepak turns to be alive. He comes home and finds his mother overjoyed to see him. She tells him that Mala had committed suicide. He becomes depressed. Aasha re-enters his life and helps him overcome his depression. They get engaged. They get acquainted with Deepamala, now a little girl, selling little God's statutes on the street and are completely enchanted by her. Aasha meets Mala and tells her they'll pay for her eye operation, so she can regain her sight. Aasha also invites her and Deepamala to the wedding. After she regains her sight, she goes to Aasha's wedding and is shocked to see Deepak. She quickly leaves, not wanting to disrupt Aasha and Deepak's lives. Mala's friend (Girish Karnad) tells Deepak that Mala is still alive and that Deepamala is actually his daughter. Aasha tells him to go and reunite with his wife and daughter, which he does. Aasha goes back on stage permanently to sing her signature song "Shisha Ho Ya Dil Ho," which means "The heart is like glass."
